One of the questions we hear most at Woodhouse: should I choose a marble or a wood dining table? The answer depends more on how you use the table than on looks alone. Here is a practical comparison based on what we make in our Riyadh workshop.
Marble: irresistible luxury, more care
Natural marble gives a table real presence, and every slab has unique veining. But it is a porous stone: acidic liquids such as lemon, vinegar and coffee can stain or dull it if left on the surface.
- Pros: luxurious look, cool and fairly heat-resistant surface, very long-lasting.
- Watch out for: wiping spills straight away, using coasters, re-sealing every 6–12 months depending on use; it is also heavy.
Wood: natural warmth and easy repair
Natural wood warms up a room, wears small marks as part of its character, and can be sanded and refinished years later. Its weak point in Riyadh is the very dry air from air conditioning and direct sunlight.
- Pros: warmer to touch and look at, lighter, easier to repair, better for families with children.
- Watch out for: trivets under hot dishes, and keeping the table away from AC vents and direct sun.
Quick comparison
| Marble | Wood | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Luxurious, cool, modern | Warm, natural |
| Stains | Sensitive to acidic liquids | Sensitive to standing water and heat |
| Scratches | Resists them well | Scratches more easily, repairs more easily |
| Care | Periodic sealing | Polish or oil depending on finish |
| Weight | Heavy | Lighter |

The middle ground: wood base, marble top
Many clients combine both: a wooden base for warmth and a marble top for luxury. You can see this in the Burgundy Dining Table, which pairs natural wood with green marble, and the Organic Marble Coffee Table with its sculpted base.
So which should you choose?
- Choose marble if the table is mostly for hosting and you love a modern luxury look.
- Choose wood for everyday family use with children, or if you prefer a warm feel.
- Choose both to get the best of each.
